Felony Charges Filed Against Man Accused of Shooting Muscatine Officer

Felony charges have been filed against the man accused of shooting a Muscatine police officer during a foot chase Friday, according to the Muscatine County Sheriff’s office. Mark Lee Jackson, 59, faces two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, a Class B felony; one count of eluding, a Class C felony; first-degree criminal mischief, a Class C felony; and driving while barred, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Jackson was also cited for excessive speed, speeding 21 mph over the limit, reckless driving and failure to obey a traffic control device.

Jackson made his first court appearance Tuesday, where a judge ordered him held in custody without bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 28 according to our news partners at KWQC.

According to Muscatine police, a Muscatine County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop Jackson near Benham Avenue and Nebraska Street early Friday evening. Jackson allegedly failed to stop and continued driving erratically, eventually leaving the roadway, driving on a bike path, going through a fence and striking a garage.

A female passenger who exited the vehicle during the pursuit later identified Jackson, according to a KWQC-TV report Authorities eventually located his vehicle parked in a tree line behind 46 Gas Lantern Square near the railroad tracks.

At about 5:27 p.m. Friday, officers reportedly spotted Jackson running behind Home Base Bar on Grandview Avenue. During the ensuing foot chase, Jackson allegedly fired at officers, striking one officer in the elbow area.

Jackson also faces theft-related allegations stemming from a July 22 incident at Muscatine Warehouse Bargains. According to court documents, Jackson and another man allegedly stole a pallet containing six large vanity sink tops valued at $1,788.
