Muscatine is preparing for a full day of patriotic festivities as the community celebrates America’s 250th birthday on Saturday, July 4, with a parade, family-friendly activities, live entertainment and a fireworks spectacular along the riverfront.
The annual Fourth of July Parade, organized by the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry, will step off at 4 p.m. in downtown Muscatine. This year’s theme, “Happy Birthday USA! Celebrating 250 Years,” encourages participants to showcase their best red, white and blue creations.
A $500 grand prize will be awarded to the float that best captures the patriotic theme. Parade entries must be submitted by June 26. Entry fees are $50 for individuals and nonprofits and $100 for businesses and advertisers, with proceeds helping fund the celebration and fireworks display.
Community members interested in volunteering as block captains for parade staging can contact the chamber by email. Motorists should also expect heavier traffic in the staging area beginning at 2 p.m.
Following the parade, the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Keep Muscatine Beautiful will host Almost Fireworks Fest on the Muscatine riverfront from 5 p.m. through the conclusion of the fireworks.
The festival will feature live music, food vendors, a beverage tent, bounce houses, community booths and activities for all ages.
Beginning at 8 p.m., attendees can enjoy a reading of the Declaration of Independence, an Honor Guard ceremony, remarks from Mayor Brad Bark and a live performance by the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra.
The evening will conclude with a synchronized fireworks and bridge lights display at approximately 9:30 p.m., commemorating 250 years of the United States. MC-93 FM will broadcast a specially curated soundtrack to accompany the fireworks, with speakers also placed throughout the riverfront for spectators.
The celebration starts well before the parade with two morning events. The Free Throws & Freedom: Red, White & Ball 3-on-3 Youth Tournament will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the riverfront basketball courts, while the Musser Public Library Children’s March begins at 9 a.m. in downtown Muscatine.
Organizers estimate the annual Fourth of July celebration costs about $40,000 to produce, including the fireworks display. Donations from businesses and residents are still being accepted to help support the longstanding community tradition.
