Muscatine Rolls Out One-Time Spring Leaf Pickup

The Muscatine Department of Public Works says there will be only one round of curbside leaf collection this spring. Residents who want the free pickup must rake leaves to the space between the sidewalk and curb, when possible, by 7 a.m. Monday, March 30.

Collection will begin in Zone 1 and proceed in order through Zone 8. Crews will not return for a second pass, and the operation ends when Zone 8 is complete. The DPW will not accept individual requests for pickup, and time spent in each zone will vary with the number of leaf piles.

“Spring is here, and we’ll have one leaf truck starting in Zone 1,” said Tyson Wedekind, roadway maintenance supervisor. “We’re asking residents who want the city to collect their leaves to have them ready by March 30.”

Missed the curbside pickup? Options for disposal

  • Use leaves as mulch or add them to a compost pile.
  • Put leaves in 20- or 30-gallon compostable paper bags for regular refuse pickup; bags must be sealed with a City of Muscatine sticker and placed at the curb.
  • Deliver bagged leaves to the Compost Facility at the Muscatine Transfer Station. Secure bags during transport to prevent litter.

Where to buy City of Muscatine stickers

Leaf collection rules (please follow)

  • Place leaves near, but not beyond, the curb so vacuum trucks can reach them.
  • Keep leaves free of branches, twigs and other debris; do not mix with trash, rocks, logs, plastic or glass.
  • Do not place leaves in the street or where they will block storm drains.
  • Keep piles clear of mailboxes, signposts and light poles.
  • Do not place leaves on cul-de-sacs, vacant lots or other city property; only use the public right-of-way.

Plan ahead: this is the only curbside leaf collection of the season. For more information, go to the City of Muscatine website.
