The Muscatine Community School District is among 125 Iowa public and private schools receiving funding through the Choose Iowa Local Food for Schools Program to purchase Iowa-grown and Iowa-raised food.
Each participating school will receive about $1,600, which must be matched at least dollar-for-dollar by the school. The program is expected to generate at least $400,000 in total purchasing power for Iowa food.
The program connects schools with Iowa farmers, food businesses and food hubs, helping bring more locally produced food to students.
The announcement comes ahead of Iowa Local Food Day on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Iowans are encouraged to celebrate by choosing locally grown, raised and made products and supporting Iowa farmers and food businesses.
