Iowa Men Take Iowa State To The Wire Before Falling

Losing in the Cy-Hawk game is never easy but when you go on the road and take the no. 4 team in the country down to the last couple of context is necessary here. The Hawkeyes hung around and battled for 40 minutes on the road against a top-five team, nearly pulling the upset at the end. If a couple of bounces go Iowa’s way, they very well could have come out on top. Those bounces went the Cyclones’ way, and Iowa dropped to 8-2 on the season.

Even with the loss, there were some positive takeaways for Ben McCollum’s team. The Hawkeyes took a 17-12 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. Iowa started the game shooting 7-of-11 from the field.

Iowa would build on its lead, using a 10-0 run over four minutes, to take a 25-12 lead, marking Iowa State’s largest deficit of the season. Over that stretch, Iowa made five straight field goals while forcing the Cyclones to miss six straight shots, including a five-minute scoring drought.

After the first 20 minutes, Iowa led, 33-25. The Hawkeyes finished the first half shooting 14-of-22 (63.6) from the field and 5-of-7 (71.4) beyond the arc. Iowa State was held to 12-of-32 (37.5) from the field and 2-of-10 from 3-point range. Six different players scored in the first half for Iowa led by junior Cam Manyawuwith eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

Iowa State used a 22-4 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a double-digit lead. The Hawkeyes would respond, using an 8-0 run, to cut the deficit to just two with nine minutes remaining. The Cyclones would build their lead to six before Iowa cut it to just one with under two minutes remaining. Iowa State was then able to clinch the game with a pair of free-throws as the Hawkeyes fell to the Cyclones, 66-62.

Iowa was led by senior Tavion Bankswith 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Manyawuadded 10 points to go along with a team high six rebounds. Senior Bennett Stirtz rounded out Hawkeyes in double digits with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Hawkeyes shot 26-of-51 (51.0) from the field and 7-of-15 (46.7) from three-point range. Iowa outrebounded Iowa State, 31-28.
