Muscatine Community School District will now allow some 8th grade students to play high school sports. This follows Iowa’s new rule letting 8th graders join IHSAA and IGHSAU-sanctioned teams.
District leaders will decide who gets this chance one student at a time. They will look at safety, readiness, skill, team needs, and what the move means for both junior high and high school teams. If you play a sport as an 8th grader, you can compete at either the middle school or high school level, but not both in the same school year.
The Board of Education says this new policy does not promise a spot on the team, playing time, or a certain team placement. The final call will come from each head coach, working with the Activities Department and your family. They will follow all district and state guidelines.
