Hot and humid conditions are expected to stick around across Muscatine through Wednesday, with the National Weather Service Quad Cities keeping a Heat Advisory in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Heat index values could reach 105 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illness. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the hottest days of the week, with heat indices around 95 to just over 100 possible across the area. Thunderstorms could develop at times and temporarily break up the heat, with some storms potentially becoming strong.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cool location and 911 should be called immediately.
Pets also need extra care during extreme heat — make sure they have plenty of fresh water and access to shade or air conditioning, avoid long walks or strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and never leave a pet in a parked vehicle. Frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas are recommended for those working outdoors, and thunderstorms could develop at times and temporarily interrupt the heat.
