Change Your Clocks This Weekend and Check Home Safety Alarms

As residents prepare to turn their clocks back one hour this weekend, the Muscatine Fire Department encourages everyone to take a few extra minutes to check, test, and replace batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

The end of daylight-saving time has long served as an important reminder to ensure these life-saving devices are working properly. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors provide critical early warning during emergencies, giving occupants valuable time to safely escape and call for help.

Fire officials recommend that residents:

  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
  • Replace batteries in battery-operated or battery-backup alarms at least once a year, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old or older.
  • Replace carbon monoxide detectors according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Ensure alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas.

“Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are among the most effective ways to protect your family from fire and carbon monoxide emergencies,” Fire Chief Mike Hartman said. “Using the time change as a reminder to test your alarms and replace batteries is a simple step that can make a lifesaving difference.”

Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly. Properly maintained carbon monoxide detectors help alert occupants before dangerous levels accumulate inside a home.

Residents are encouraged to create and practice a home escape plan with all household members and to know two ways out of every room whenever possible.

As clocks are turned back this weekend, take a moment to help ensure your home is protected. A few minutes spent checking detectors today could save lives tomorrow.
