The City of Muscatine will recognize the lifeguards and pool staff who help keep the community safe during International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Appreciation Day on Friday, July 31.
Mayor Brad Bark proclaimed July 31 as International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Appreciation Day during Tuesday’s Muscatine City Council meeting, recognizing the employees who serve at the Muscatine Aquatic Center. The proclamation comes during the facility’s 21st summer of operation and highlights the staff’s commitment to safety, customer service, and professionalism.
“Muscatine Aquatic Center staff serve the public rain or shine, early mornings and late evenings, with outstanding public relations skills and smiles on their faces,” Bark said.
Aquatic Center Manager McKenna Schumaker accepted the proclamation on behalf of the staff and praised the team’s dedication to protecting guests throughout the summer.
“Tonight, I would like to recognize a group of young people whose impact reaches far beyond the walls of the Muscatine Aquatic Center,” Schumaker said. “They dedicate their summers not just to a job, but to the safety and well-being of every family who walks through our gates.”
Schumaker said lifeguards and pool staff undergo extensive training, remain vigilant during long shifts, respond confidently to emergencies, and support one another in demanding conditions.
“Their dedication shows in the way they comfort children, assist injured patrons, and act decisively when swimmers need help,” she said.
She added that many staff members give up weekends, holidays, and time with family and friends because they understand the importance of their role. Beyond lifesaving skills, Schumaker said they demonstrate leadership, compassion, resilience, and professionalism that help create a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
The Muscatine Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate its aquatic staff on July 31 at the Muscatine Aquatic Center in Weed Park. Visitors will be encouraged to thank lifeguards and pool staff for their commitment to keeping swimmers safe.
“This day gives us a chance to highlight the individuals who make our community’s summer aquatic experiences safe and enjoyable,” Interim Parks and Recreation Director Nick Gow said. “Their preparation, vigilance, and professionalism are what set the Muscatine Aquatic Center apart.”
International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Appreciation Day is sponsored by the World Waterpark Association and is observed annually to recognize aquatic professionals for preventing injuries, responding to emergencies, and maintaining safe, family-friendly facilities.
The Muscatine Aquatic Center welcomes thousands of visitors each summer and is staffed by certified professionals trained in CPR, first aid, and water rescue.
“We’re incredibly proud of our lifeguards and pool staff,” Program Supervisor Blake Allington said. “They are the unsung heroes of summer, and this day gives our community a meaningful chance to acknowledge their hard work and dedication.”
