The Muscatine City Council will consider nine appeals involving buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East Second Street when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Muscatine City Hall.
The appeals were filed by property owners after the city’s Community Development Department determined the buildings were substandard, unsafe, and unfit for occupancy under city code. Public hearings on the appeals were held during the council’s July 14 In-Depth (Study) Session.
Council members will review each appeal individually and vote to either uphold or overturn the determination.
The appeals stem from the city’s precautionary evacuation of buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East Second Street after a structural engineer determined the buildings posed a safety risk and recommended immediate evacuation to protect residents, employees, and visitors.
Before the regular agenda begins, Mayor Brad Bark will present a proclamation recognizing July 31 as International Lifeguard and Pool Staff Appreciation Day, marking the second consecutive year the city has honored staff at the Muscatine Aquatic Center.
Other items on Tuesday’s agenda include:
- Authorizing an application to the Iowa Department of Transportation for federal transit funding to study Muscatine Transit System routes and schedules.
- Awarding a contract to Manatt’s Inc. for the Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay Project.
- Approving dates for the 2026-27 Muscatine Municipal Bow Deer Hunt.
- Authorizing the purchase of a TYMCO regenerative air street sweeper.
- Approving the city’s FY2027 State Transit Assistance agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
The meeting is open to the public and will be held in the city council chambers on the second floor of Muscatine City Hall, 215 Sycamore Street. Residents may also watch the meeting live on Civic TV (MPW Channel 2) or the City of Muscatine’s YouTube channel.
