The City of Muscatine has expanded safety measures and ordered the evacuation of all buildings on the north side of the 200 block of East 2nd Street after ongoing structural inspections determined the properties are unsafe for occupancy.

City officials said engineers continue to monitor changing conditions at 201 and 203 E. Second St., where additional movement has been observed in recent days. Anthony Kies, the city’s chief of police, said conditions at the site remain dynamic as officials work with structural engineers and property owners to determine the safest course of action while preserving as much of the historic buildings as possible.

The latest evacuations follow inspections conducted as part of the city’s efforts to safely demolish 201 E. Second St. and stabilize the adjoining structure at 203 E. Second St. Engineers determined that movement in the buildings warranted further investigation of neighboring properties and recommended immediate evacuation to protect residents, workers and visitors.

The situation escalated on Saturday, June 13, when the Muscatine Fire Department responded to a report of a possible fire at the site. Firefighters found no fire but discovered that a foundation failure at 203 E. Second St. had caused part of its roof to collapse onto 201 E. Second St. The demolition contractor, which had already been working to stabilize the shared wall between the buildings, was immediately notified and responded to assess the damage.

East 2nd Street, including its intersection with Sycamore Street, remains closed to all traffic except authorized personnel, including demolition crews, structural engineers, utility workers, public safety officials and city staff involved in the response.

City officials said demolition activities will resume once revised engineering guidance is available. The timeline for demolition and stabilization will depend on the results of ongoing structural evaluations.

The city is asking the public to respect all road closures, stay away from the affected area and continue supporting downtown businesses while crews address the complex situation.

Additional updates will be released as more information becomes available.
