Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but health experts say many cases can be prevented with healthier lifestyle choices and early intervention.

UnityPoint Health will hold a no cost community educational event, “Protect What Matters Most: Understanding & Preventing Heart Disease,” on Tuesday, June 2, in Rock Island.

The event is part of the Heart to Heart Community Education Series and will feature Dr. Phanicharan Sistla of Cardiovascular Medicine, PLLC. Attendees will hear practical information about heart disease risk factors, prevention strategies and ways to improve long-term cardiovascular health.

According to organizers, the session will cover:

  • A simple overview of heart disease
  • Common heart disease risk factors and which can be prevented
  • How doctors help patients manage cardiovascular risks
  • Evidence-based lifestyle changes that can reduce heart disease risk

“Heart disease often develops silently over time, but the good news is that small, consistent lifestyle changes can reduce a person’s risk,” Sistla said in a news release.

The event runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Jardine Auditorium inside UnityPoint Health – Trinity, located at 2701 17th Street in Rock Island.

A hospital spokesperson says seating is limited and advance registration is encouraged through UnityPoint.org. The event is supported by donors through Trinity Health Foundation.
