There aren’t moral victory trophies in college football and the Iowa Hawkeyes know they had opportunities to upend number 11 Indiana  at Kinnick Stadium.

The Hawkeyes let a game slip away against the Hoosiers that they feel they should have won. Iowa played well, but made too many mistakes down the stretch and didn’t capitalize on the big plays that could have swayed this game, as they dropped to 3-2 after a 20-15 defeat that puts them at 1-1 in Big Ten play. Indiana moved to 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big Ten.

For most of the game, Iowa outplayed the explosive Indiana offense led by transfer QB Fernando Mednoza. Often pressure and hurried, Mendoza made plays when needed including the game winning pass to Edwin Sarratt, who broke a tackle and ran  49 yards to the end zone. The Hawkeyes had the play with less than three minutes to play after a Zack Lutmer interception set the Hawkeyes up across midfield but the offense behind backup quarterback Hank Brown stalled and then Drew Stevens missed a 41 yard field goal giving the ball back to the Hoosiers.

Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz talked about the back and forth game in his comments. “Today was a really tough competitive game between two very good and very determined teams. Hats off to them. They did a great job finishing out.”
