A Muscatine resident and his dogs were safely evacuated from a structure fire Tuesday by off-duty personnel, neighbors, and on duty personnel.

The Muscatine Fire Department (MFD) responded to a residential structure fire at 1006 East 7th Street Tuesday. Battalion Chief 303 (BC 303) arrived on the scene and observed smoke coming from the home. A second alarm callback was initiated to bring in additional resources.

Upon arrival, an off-duty firefighter and a neighbor assisted the homeowner in safely evacuating through a bedroom window. Heavy fire was visible from a window on the right side of the structure. Fire crews worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent further damage.

Engine 311 led the initial fire attack, while Truck 310 provided vertical ventilation. Squad 353 was assigned as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), and Engine 312 assisted with fire suppression and conducted a primary search of the home. During search efforts, firefighters located and safely removed two dogs from a bedroom off the living room.

Battalion Chief 303 initiated a transitional attack from the exterior before Engine 311 completed interior suppression efforts. Fire crews successfully brought the fire under control, and primary and secondary searches confirmed that no additional occupants were inside.

Muscatine Power & Water (MPW) and Alliant Energy responded to secure gas and electrical utilities. The Muscatine Police Department also provided assistance on the scene. Overhaul operations were supported by Fruitland Fire. Fire Investigators Collins and Edwards, along with the State Fire Marshal’s Office, are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.

The Red Cross and 1800BoardUp have been contacted to assist the homeowner. The scene remains secured as the investigation continues.

The Muscatine Fire Department thanks all responding agencies for their support and reminds residents to check their smoke alarms regularly and practice fire safety in their homes.
