The Muscatine Fire Department saw a drop in the calls for service according to the annual report from the department released earlier this week.
MFD responded to 5,513 calls for service during 2024, or about 15.1 calls per day, with December the busiest month with 500 calls for service. Muscatine Fire averaged 459 calls for service per month in 2024. The department had a record number of calls for service in 2022 (5,909) and responded to 5,773 calls for service in 2023.
Monday proved to be the busiest day of the week for firefighters and EMS personnel with 856 runs with Thursday a close second at 820 runs during the calendar year.
“These calls include all types of fires, medical emergencies, ambulance transports, motor vehicle accidents, various recues, and hazardous material responses,” Jerry Ewers, Muscatine Fire Chief, said.
Training for emergencies is the highest priority outside of actual emergency responses. Fire Department staff trains constantly on attacking a variety of fires, responding to medical emergencies, ambulance transports, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, and specialty rescues on land and water. The department logged 11,873 hours of training in 2024.
“The knowledge, skills, abilities, and professionalism of our members is demonstrated on a daily basis on service calls and when out in the community,” Ewers said.
Some highlights from the annual report:
- The number of fire related calls in 2024 was down slightly with structure fires (21), cooking fires (12), and vegetation fires (12) making up the bulk of the responses.
- EMS calls account for 4,498 of the 5,513 calls for service received by the Muscatine Fire Department.
- Deployed five PowerPro EMS ambulance cots into service and provided in-depth training sessions for Fruitland Fire, Muscatine Police, and the sheriff’s Office, optimizing patient handling and comfort.
- While the department spends a large amount of time training staff, the department also is involved in educating the public through Community Risk Reduction efforts and community outreach training (Stop the Bleed, Hands Only CPR, etc.).
