UnityPoint Health – Trinity Heart Center successfully performed the Quad Cities’ first leadless pacemaker procedure in July, marking a significant advancement in local heart care.
The procedure was completed by Helbert Acosta, MD, of Cardiovascular Medicine, PLLC.
“Trinity Heart Center continues to set the standard for exceptional heart care in the Quad Cities, and we’re honored that patients trust us with their heart health,” said Kathy Pulley, director of cardiology services at Trinity Heart Center. “Our goal is to help patients feel at ease both emotionally and physically so they can return to doing what they love most.”
A pacemaker is a small device that uses electrical impulses to help maintain a steady heartbeat. Traditional pacemakers include a battery placed under the skin and leads, or wires, that connect to the heart. Leadless pacemakers regulate the heartbeat without wires and are implanted directly into the heart’s lower right chamber.
“The leadless pacemaker is implanted through a small puncture, often in the groin, making the procedure minimally invasive,” Acosta said. “Patients typically experience quicker recovery times, fewer restrictions after surgery and a reduced risk of complications. Because there are no leads, we also see lower infection rates and improved long-term outcomes.”
UnityPoint Health says the milestone aligns with Trinity Heart Center’s focus on bringing the latest and most effective cardiac technology to the region.
“We’re proud to lead the way in offering advanced heart care,” Pulley said. “Patients can count on the team at Trinity Heart Center for compassionate, high-quality care close to home, without having to travel far.”
Patients interested in learning whether they may benefit from a leadless pacemaker should consult their doctor. More information about Trinity Heart Center’s heart care services is available at unitypoint.org.
