The Muscatine Fire Department (MFD) responded to an early‑morning house fire Wednesday after the Muscatine Joint Communications Center (MUSCOM) received a 911 call at 12:57 a.m. reporting a mattress on fire inside a residence at 411 Spruce Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the home and the incident commander requested additional alarms. The Fruitland Fire Department was automatically dispatched as part of an existing aid agreement.
Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack and brought the fire under control within approximately 10 minutes. Damage was largely contained to the interior of the structure. Three adults and three pets were displaced, and assistance was provided on scene by the American Red Cross and 1‑800‑BoardUp.
Two civilians sustained minor injuries. One individual was transported to UnityPoint Health – Muscatine in stable condition. No injuries to responders were reported.
Fire investigators arrived immediately and completed an initial assessment. While the exact cause remains under review, preliminary findings indicate the fire was not intentional. The initial loss estimate is approximately $60,000.
A total of 11 MFD firefighters responded to the scene, with additional personnel arriving later to support operations and investigation. The Muscatine Police Department provided assistance, and a fire engine and crew of four from the Fruitland Fire Department also responded.
