Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays and increased pedestrian activity in Muscatine Saturday, Aug. 15, as the 49th annual Watermelon Stampede takes over area streets.
The 5K and 10K races will run from 8 to 10 a.m., with both races starting and finishing at the Muscatine Community YMCA, 1823 Logan St.
Drivers should slow down, use caution and watch for runners, walkers, volunteers and race officials along the routes. Temporary road closures, traffic delays and controlled intersections are expected during the event.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible to avoid delays.
Muscatine Construction Closures
Several existing road closures will also affect travel near the race routes. Logan Street is closed from Climer Street to Cemetery Lane, while Newell Avenue is closed from Maiden Lane to Devitt Avenue because of ongoing work on the West Hill Sanitary and Storm Sewer Separation Project.
Drivers should follow all posted traffic-control signs and avoid entering construction areas.

5K route: Logan Street → West Fulliam Street → Kindler Avenue → Lucas Street → Logan Street → Climer Street → Kindler Avenue → West Fulliam Street → Logan Street → YMCA finish.
10K route: Logan Street → West Fulliam Street → Kindler Avenue → Lucas Street → Houser Street → turnaround before Cedar Plaza Drive → Houser Street → Lucas Street → West 8th Street → Climer Street → Lucas Street → Kindler Avenue → West Fulliam Street → Logan Street → YMCA finish.
The City of Muscatine asks residents and motorists to plan ahead and allow extra travel time Saturday morning.
