The Muscatine City Council will conduct two public hearings during its February 20 meeting seeking public comments on removing the City Ordinance on the age limit for fishing at the Weed Park Lagoons, and welcoming public comments on updates to the Greenwood Cemetery rules and regulations.
The public is welcomed, and encouraged, to attend when the Council meets at 6 p.m. Thursday in the City Council Chambers on the second flood of Muscatine City Hall. The meeting is open to all individuals regardless of language spoken or disability. Any person requiring a reasonable accommodation to participate should contact the City Clerk’s office at 563-264-1550.
During the recently completed Weed Park Lagoon Project, the Iowa DNR approached the City and offered to manage and stock the lagoon with appropriate fish species if the City would change the ordinance limiting the age of people who could fish in the lagoon. The current City Ordinance (Title 3 – Public Ways and Property, Chapter 5 – Public Parks 3-5-10 S) prohibits those over the age of 14 from fishing in the lagoons.
The request to the City Council is to remove the restrictive ordinance so that all citizens may legally fish in the Weed Park Lagoon as long as they follow Iowa DNR normal fishing requirements.
The first reading of an ordinance removing the age restriction will be read later in the meeting.
The second public hearing is in regards to updating the Greenwood Cemetery Rules and Regulations, which were last updated almost 10 years ago. City Ordinance requires the approval of the City Council by resolution to update the rules and regulations.
A resolution approving the amendments will be voted on later in the meeting.
The Council is also scheduled to:
- Set four public hearings in regards to: Muscatine Municipal Housing Agency Five-Year Plan; the sale of undeveloped right-of-way on Van Buren Street; the sale of undeveloped right-of-way on Parkview Court; and, review of the plans and specifications of the Lake Park Boulevard Bridge Deck Overlay Project.
- Approve the purchase of a home as part of the West Hill Sewer Separation Project Phase 6D.
- Approve the purchase of two trailer message boards.
- Approve the application for a Traffic Study grant.
- Receive an update by Dr. Heather Carlson on progress through the Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Grant.
