A local arts volunteer has been recognized for more than two decades of dedication to the arts in Muscatine County. Richard Sessler is the recipient of the 2026 Shirley Jean Drake Great Initiative Award during the Cultural Alliance Celebration earlier this month. The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine presented the award in recognition of Sessler’s longstanding leadership and volunteer service with the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra.

For the past 24 years, Sessler has played a key role in supporting the orchestra through grant writing, fundraising, partnership development and other efforts that advance its mission. His work has helped expand access to music and educational opportunities throughout Muscatine County.

One example is the Howe Young Artist Competition, which provides scholarships and performance opportunities for young musicians, helping support the next generation of musical talent.

The award also includes a $1,500 stipend that the recipient may direct to a charitable cause of their choice. Sessler selected the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra as the beneficiary, providing additional support to the organization he has served for more than two decades.

The Shirley Jean Drake Great Initiative Award was established by the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine in honor of its inaugural recipient, Shirley Jean Drake. A longtime member of the foundation’s board, Drake left a legacy of meaningful initiatives benefiting the community, county and state.

The award continues to recognize individuals whose cheerful, ethical and inspirational determination creates a lasting impact.

The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine congratulated Sessler on the recognition and expressed appreciation for his continued commitment to the arts and the Muscatine community.
