The Muscatine Art Center announced a $200,000 anonymous donation that will help stabilize operations during a challenging budget year and support the organization’s 2026-27 operating budget.
The contribution provides short-term financial relief as the Art Center works toward long-term sustainability following a significant reduction in operating support. The funding will allow the Art Center to continue serving residents, students, families and visitors while the City of Muscatine explores ways to restore funding and identify new revenue sources.
Board members and staff are implementing cost-saving measures, though officials said continued reductions could affect programs and services.
“We are incredibly grateful for this and all of our donors and visitors who understand the Muscatine Art Center’s value,” Board of Trustees President Mark Seaman said in a statement. “While the gift is not a long-term solution, it will allow us to plan for a sustainable future while continuing to celebrate our area’s history, art and culture uninterrupted.”
To support long-term planning efforts, the Board of Trustees hired former Art Center Director Barbara Christensen as an administrative consultant. Christensen led the Art Center from 1989 to 2012.

She will work with trustees, staff, volunteers and community members to evaluate operations, identify efficiencies and explore new opportunities for financial support and revenue growth.
“The Muscatine Art Center’s long history of service to area children, families and visitors is one that the city and region can be proud of,” Christensen said. “Current staff are passionate, dedicated and committed to the arts and education, and I am so grateful to work with them. The Board of Trustees is focused on turning the present moment into an opportunity for prudent planning and redoubling efforts to grow and expand in the months and years to come.”
The Board of Trustees and the City of Muscatine launched a search for a permanent director in April. The position is currently posted on the city’s website.
