Step back in time and experience one of Muscatine’s most treasured landmarks—the beautifully restored “Old Barn” in Discovery Park, 3300 Cedar St, Muscatine. As part of the Iowa Barn Foundation’s All-State Barn Tour, this historic gem will be open to the public September 13–14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and visitors can enter through Harmony Lane off Houser Street.
A Rare Gothic-Arched Barn
Built in 1926 after a fire destroyed three earlier barns, the Old Barn was designed by Louden Manufacturing Company of Fairfield, Iowa. It features a striking Gothic-arched roof with a free-span loft that soars 42 feet high—a unique engineering feat for its time. The innovative design used laminated arches made from angled, staggered planks, raised by manpower and horses, creating both strength and maximum hay storage.

From County Farm to Community Landmark
The barn is part of what was once the Muscatine County Poor Farm/County Home Farm, established in the 1800s to house and support those unable to provide for themselves. In its prime, the farm raised Holstein dairy cattle along with other livestock, providing food for residents and income for the county. Able-bodied residents were expected to pitch in with farm work or household chores, making the farm a self-sustaining community.
Restoration and Preservation
Thanks to the dedication of the nonprofit Friends of the Old Barn, the structure has been carefully revitalized with a metal roof, staircase, and elevator—while preserving its original charm. Today, it stands as both a historic treasure and an educational space, sharing Muscatine County’s agricultural heritage with new generations.
During the open house, volunteers from Friends of the Old Barn will be available to lead tours and share stories of the barn’s remarkable past.
Support the Iowa Barn Foundation
The Iowa Barn Foundation, a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit, provides restoration grants to barn owners across the state, ensuring Iowa’s iconic barns continue to inspire for years to come. Donations and memberships directly support this mission.
