For the first time in six years the home team won in the CyHawk game as Iowa State defeated Iowa 16-13 on a 54 yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy. It’s the second year in a row he’s hit a 54 yarder in the 4th quarter to beat the Hawkeyes.
In a low scoring battle the Cyclones outlasted the Hawkeyes as Rocco Becht converted on four third downs during the game winning drive to set up Konrardy for the game winning kick. Becht finishes 18-for-27 for 134 yards and a touchdown. Mark Gronowski went 13-for-24 for 83 yards and an interception, but he added a rushing touchdown as the Cy-Hawk trophy will stay in Ames.
A short pass followed by a Tamatoa McDonough sack of Mark Gronowski forced Iowa to take its final timeout with 1:23 to go ahead of third-and-11. Another sack by McDonough forced the Hawkeyes to scramble back to the line on fourth down, and a wild throw by Gronowski came up short.
Next week Iowa is back at Kinnick Stadium to take on UMass at 6:30pm. Coverage on the Hawkeye Radio Network starts at 5:30pm and is brought to you by Community Health Care Dental Clinic, Muscatine Power and Water and Ed Morse Chevy Buick and GMC on MC 93.1.
