In their seventh matchup of the season, the Muskie girls’ basketball team played a hard-fought game against the Davenport North Wildcats. Though the Muskie girls ultimately lost to the Wild Cats, bringing their standings for the season to 1-6, the game represents their closest loss, and shows growth from the beginning of the season.
While the Wildcats earned the first two points of the game, the Muskies quickly tied and then quickly pulled ahead of them, bringing the score to 10-6. This score stood out as the Muskies largest lead of the night. While the Wildcats did score another two points before the end of the quarter, the Muskies finished the first quarter ahead, with a score of 10-8.
The Wildcats got hot in the second quarter, scoring six unanswered points to bring their lead to 16-10. The Muskies then began to chip away at their lead, scoring two two-point shots. At the end of the first half, Alicia Garcia and Zoey Long made impressive back to back three-point shots, putting the Muskies squarely back in the game with a score of 27-20, only seven points away from tying the Wildcats.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats played aggressively. Midway through the quarter, they had put up twelve more points, to bring the score to 39-26. The Muskie girls refused to give up though, and by the end of the quarter, they once again had only a seven-point difference between them and Davenport, making the score 41-34.
Once again the Wildcats stretched their lead, gaining nine points on the Muskies to bring the score to 47-38, but the Muskies once again answered their challenge and scored four more points, making it a five-point game. In the end, the Wildcats maintained their lead, and with a two-point free throw to end the game, they won with a final score of 49-42.
In another noteworthy outing, Garcia earned CBI Bank and Trust Offensive Player of the Game for leading the Muskies in scoring with seventeen points scored. For another stellar performance, Rylie Moss earned the designation of Buffalo Wild Wings Defensive player of the game for her formidable performance.
