On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th between 7:00 and 10:45 am, Warrior CrossFit Muscatine (WCFM) invites area athletes, veterans, and the public to join together to honor fallen soldiers. WCFM presents Muscatine Murph, a fitness activity to remember fallen soldiers and encourage physical fitness. The event will take place at the Riverfront in Muscatine.
Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. The day offers a time to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States armed forces.
CrossFit members typically participate in hero workouts to recognize the sacrifice of all soldiers who have fallen in the line of duty. On Memorial Day, CrossFit gyms will specifically honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2005, with a workout called Murph.
“Completing Murph is humbling,” says Kyle Jack, owner of WCFM. “It’s not only a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice so many have given, but an acknowledgment that they will never be forgotten, and their service will always be honored.”
The workout follows the steps of Murphy’s favorite work out. It consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and finishes with another mile run. Previously referred to as Body Armor, since Murphy’s death, CrossFitters dubbed it Murph in his honor. Now, CrossFitters across the world will be paying tribute to his ultimate sacrifice with this routine.
WCFM will continue the tradition of recognizing Murphy and all fallen soldiers by hosting their first annual Muscatine Murph event on Memorial Day. WCFM welcomes the public to participate in this free event. To register for the event, visit warriorcfm.com/murph.
Muscatine Murph has many possible modifications, so people of all fitness levels can participate. “No one should be intimidated,” says Jack. “Coaches will be on-hand with recommendations on how to scale the workout so all can take part. This event is for everyone.”
