FFA, a dynamic youth organization, changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talents through hands-on experiences in agriculture, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success. Members include future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers, and outstanding professionals in many career fields.
Officially named the National FFA Organization, the group changed their name from Future Farmers of America in 1988 to reflect the growing diversity in agriculture and to give those who, “were not raised on a farm,” a chance to have a larger role in the organization.
The Muscatine FFA gives students many chances to practice the skills and knowledge they gain in the agriculture classrooms at Muscatine High School, Central Middle School, and West Middle School. Projects and activities range from career development and leadership development events (CDE and LDE contests) such as creed speaking, prepared public speaking, extemporaneous speaking, radio broadcasting, job interview, team conduct of meetings, team parliamentary procedure, livestock judging, horse judging, poultry judging, soil judging, nursery landscaping, environment and natural resources, floriculture, agriculture sales, and many, many more.
Muscatine FFA also offers its members supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs), including finding internships and jobs in agriculture and participated in agriculture related projects that make them eligible for proficiency degrees. Students can earn degrees (awards) or run for officer positions at the chapter, district, state, and national levels.
Finally, Muscatine FFA also hosts livestock shows, judging contests, helps with STEM Day and Safety Day at the Agricultural Learning Center, runs the Kiddie Barnyard, runs garden plots, helps with the crop fields at the Agricultural Learning Center, promotes their organization with floats in parades, hosts chapter bonding events, and much more. FFA opens the door to endless scholarship opportunities and the skills gained can set students up to get full ride scholarship opportunities in agriculture.
