As Muscatine rang in 2019 last week, many participated in the annual tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. People set goals of improving their health or physical fitness, exercising more, or trying something new. To help everyone stick to their resolutions, the Muscatine Community Y (the Y) will offer one of its semiannual demo weeks from Sunday, January 6th to Saturday, January 12th. Bret Olson, the Y’s Executive Director, describes Demo Week as, “an opportunity to try something new.” Both members and non-members can try any of the Y’s many classes for free. These include a staggering variety of fitness classes, such as indoor cycling, kickboxing, Pilates, water exercise, yoga, and Zumba, as well as programs designed especially for kids, such as preschool gymnastics. Olson shared that the indoor cycling or spinning classes have proven wildly popular. Offered at many times during the day and throughout the week in the Y’s new Indoor Cycling Studio, participants enjoy how they can adapt each class to suit their personal goals and needs. Additionally, Olson finds many seniors like the Y’s water exercise classes because they offer low impact workouts in the Y’s well-heated therapy pool. Since its reintroduction, yoga classes at the Y have gained popularity and have become some of the most sought-after classes over the past several months. Olson also noted that many Y members also enjoy the kickboxing and bootcamp classes, which frequently attract new students working on New Year’s resolutions. No matter what your taste, Olson wants everyone who participates in Demo Week to find a class that appeals to them. “[My] hope is that people will try them, love them, and get hooked on them.” For any new visitors to the Y who try classes during Demo Week and would like to continue coming, or who would like to have access to the Y’s state of the art basketball gym, cardio and weights area, or walking track, Olson encourages them to get a Y membership. From now until January 19th, the Y will not charge processing fees for new members and will give them gift certificates to use for special Y programming. To become a Y member, interested people only need to bring a photo ID and their bank account and routing numbers to set up direct debit (the most popular form of payment) to the Y, located at 1823 Logan Street, Muscatine. No matter what health and fitness resolutions you set for yourself this year or what kinds of physical activities you enjoy, the Y has the classes and facilities to help you. Though employees at the Y will happily give tours to anyone who requests them any time, Demo Week offers one of the best times to personally experience everything the Y has to offer. If you have not visited the Y recently, you owe it to yourself to see all the improvements they have made over the past year. So, let Demo Week serve as your personal invitation to check out the Y and use its resources to make your resolutions realities.
