On Friday of last week, I spoke with Allison Phelps who teaches Yoga at her studio in Muscatine, and also at McKinley Elementary and the high school. Allison and I spoke in length about what her Yoga’s purpose was for the students. She focuses on teaching them “mindfulness”. Which she describes as being aware of yourself. An example she gave was knowingly being aware of how you react and what your body language is saying when someone is projecting negativity towards you. Allison encourages them to pause, breath, and smile in those situations. As it is important to remember that the person projecting those vibes may be dealing with things you don’t understand. Her message to the students is an encouraging one, and it has shown that it helps with stress management too. And, as surprising as it is to think that kids that young are experiencing stress, that is the case at times. Youth today are stressed out more than one would expect and having a good outlet and ways to find peace with situations is incredibly beneficial.
Allison is hopeful that she will be able to share her training in mindfulness with even more students in the future but is very happy with what she does now and says parents have noticed a difference in their children since beginning her exercises. It is encouraging to see students take such an interest in their mental health, and that the administration is helping them do so.
