A lifelong Muscatine resident, Karen Cooney announced that she will run for Muscatine Community School District’s (MCSD’s) school board in the November 2019 election.
Cooney worked for thirty-two years as a Housing and Self Sufficiency Section Eight Coordinator for the City of Muscatine. As part of her job, she worked directly with the HUD Low Income Housing Department. Cooney also worked for the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) as a Job Specialist who helped individuals with training and securing jobs.
After retiring, Cooney continued to use her skills to help families identify needs that include the benefit of education for a successful future. Currently, she works as a substitute teacher for MCSD and volunteers at the Muscatine Art Center, the Adler Theater, and with the COMP Dog Park of Muscatine.
Cooney knows the growing need for good education for families and the importance of meeting individual educational needs. Her skills from her past experiences of working for the City of Muscatine, as Manager for Public Housing at Hershey Manor, and as Manager of Sunset Park, mean she knows and understands the challenges that families face daily.
Her skills will benefit MCSD’s work for all students to achieve learning and positive outcomes for the future of their education. “Knowledge is power,” and Cooney knows that we need to instill in our students the power of their education for the future.
