After four successful years, both academically and athletically, and several state football records, Durant High School wide receiver Mason Compton plans to continue his football career in college. On Thursday, February 21st, Compton signed his letter of intent to continue playing football next fall at Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa.
While at Durant High School, Compton proved himself a phenomenal wide receiver. A First Team All-State player this year and four-year letter winner, Compton ran 996 receiving yards this year, making the second highest in 1A football and in the top twenty overall for all Iowa High School players. Additionally, Compton racked up 2,540 career receiving yards (the 13th most in the state), 146 receptions (the 24th most in the state), and twenty-five touchdowns (the 31st most in the state).
Off the field, Compton has over a 3.0 grade point average and earned his spot in the Durant High School chapter of the National Honor Society. “He’s all you can ask for in that respect,” Durant High School principal and football coach Joel Diederichs proudly stated.
Compton visited Drake University and found its football program fit him well. Diederichs reported that Compton has, “developed a good relationship with the Drake coaching staff,” already, and that Compton feels especially excited that the person who recruited him has now become the head coach. As for Diederichs, he thinks Drake will suit Compton well too. “I think it’s an excellent choice. Drake is known both for its sports and academics, and I think he’ll do well in both.”
As Compton sets his sights on both college football and possibly studying business at Drake, Diederichs feels he will do well in both pursuits. “I wish him the best. I think he’ll be a leader on and off the field, in and out of the classroom. I think he’ll continue his strong work ethic and succeed at whatever he does.”
With a proven record of success and high hopes, Compton will surely continue to distinguish himself in all areas at Drake. As Compton continues his football career at the college level, he will surely continue to set records and make his Durant fans at home proud.
