As students returned from spring break for the final segment of the school year, Central Middle School’s Student Leadership Group (SLG) knew they wanted to go out with a bang. This dedicated group of students worked together to create and run a fundraiser that brought in $129 for the Muscatine Humane Society.
The first week back from spring break, the SLG students worked together to coordinate a whole school pajama day fundraiser. Marnee Acker, a teacher sponsor for the group, shared that SLG, “held a ‘Welcome Back from Spring Break Pajama Day,’ to raise money for the Muscatine Humane Society. . .. Kids had to pay a dollar to wear jammies and were given a wristband to show they’d paid. Teachers were encouraged to participate.”
Through the hard work that the SLG students put into planning, publicizing, and running their fundraiser, they earned $129 to give to the Muscatine Humane Society. The students felt extremely pleased with their accomplishments and that their work would help the animals at the Muscatine Humane Society. One SLG member shared that the fundraiser, “gives us a positive energy because it allows us to do good in our community.” Even teachers felt impressed by what SLG accomplished, with one noting, “I think our pajama day was a success. Knowing that our donation will vaccinate sixty animals, or any number of animals, makes it worthwhile.”
On Thursday, April 4th, Chris McGinnis, Director of the Muscatine Humane Society, visited the SLG students to accept their donation. She expressed gratitude for the donation, and let students know that it will go towards vaccinating sixty animals. Since as many as 2,000 animals can go through the Muscatine Humane Society in a year and the facility currently cares for 137 cats and forty-five dogs, having a portion of the year’s vaccines paid for provides a lot of help to them.
As the school year continues to wind down, the Central Middle School SLG will keep finding ways to help and unite their school and community. In the process, they will continue developing the planning and collaboration skills that will make them successful leaders as they grow up.
