The Friends of the Old Stone Church (FOSC) invites the public to the 2018 Christmas Services at the Old Stone Church on Saturday, December 15th, 2018, at 4:00 pm. You can find the Old Stone Church located at 3507 180th Street, Muscatine, Iowa, one and one-half miles north of Wild Cat Den State Park.
Muscatine’s Old Stone Church represents a fully restored historic church built by the county’s early settlers. In 1867, a group of pioneers of German heritage needed a place of worship for their German Methodist Episcopal congregation. Their faith led them to hand quarry stone from nearby Pine Creek (one-half mile to the west) to build the church themselves.
After the congregation abandoned the church in 1910, it had many uses and slowly deteriorated.  These included use as a machine shop and later, a storage area for oats and hay.  Eventually, the building became entirely abandoned.  In 2006, the FOSC formed to restore the church.  After several years of work, the group completed their work, making it ready for use again. In 2010, the FOSC held their first event in the restored church, a Christmas service. This service took place almost exactly 100 years after the building’s last use.
Today, families and other groups can use the Old Stone Church for a variety of events. To make a donation to the FOSC (which qualifies as a 501(c)(3) non-profit  and member of the Muscatine Area Heritage Association) or to obtain information about using the church for events, including weddings, contact FOSC president John Scott, President at  (563)-299-8205 or [email protected].
