As the 4th of July draws closer, organizers and participants prepare the Muscatine Adult Soapbox Derby. Some teams displayed their cars at the Muscatine Community Y Lip Sync Battle on June 13, 2017.
On race day, teams will compete in one of two divisions. In the Speed Division, vehicles will be timed. Each heat will consist of two to three vehicles. The cars with the fastest average time after at least three trips downhill will race in the championship. In the Art Division, vehicles will not worry about their time down the hill. The goal for this category is to display family-friendly creativity and to be spectacles as they move down the hill.
The total cost of constructing the vehicles cannot exceed $500.00. Each team’s vehicle will be inspected prior to the run to ensure the safety of the drivers and spectators. The cost of the required brake systems is not factored into the total cost of the vehicle.
Troy “Stinky” Philpott said, “I’m really looking forward to racing. This should be a lot of fun.” Philpott added, “I’m looking forward to seeing all of the cars.”
Josh Onken, who is a member of the Leadership Muscatine group overseeing the project, said, “We have seen the drawings of the cars, and it is a really competitive group.”
The races will begin at 11:00 a.m. The starting line will push back one block, which should make for a faster race experience. The four-block course will have the finish line at the intersection of Third Street and Iowa Avenue. Tony Tone from Vintage Sound 93.1 will provide play-by-play announcing for the event.
