In its third year, the Second Saturday series is growing efforts to promote the arts and culture in Muscatine and support Muscatine’s downtown. Second Saturday is a once-a-month arts and music street fest held on 2nd Street between Cedar and Pine on the second Saturday of every month from June to October.
So what’s new this year?
The festival expands to four hours, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The extra hour allows the festival to hire twice as many musicians and musical acts. Unique and family-friendly sounds are sought after. Each act will be paid $50 to perform a two-hour set, and musicians are also able to sell their CDs and band merchandise.
Vendor fees are lower than in previous years. Street vendors like artists, writers, crafters, food and drink providers, and hands-on activities will only pay $15 per month or $60 for the season. Vendors may take advantage of an early signup discount fee of $50 for the season if paid before May 15. Not-for-profit organizations may trade volunteer hours for vendor booth space.
$1000 in Second Saturday Bucks will be given out to festival goers during the June event. These can be spent at participating downtown businesses throughout the festival season.
June Second Saturday is partnering with the Relay for Life, which will hold its events in downtown Muscatine on June 9. In addition to the traditional Survivor/Caregiver Walk, the Luminaria and a street concert will be part of Second Saturday.
The festival has also added a third presenting sponsor, The Merrill Hotel.
“This in exciting partnership,” said Flynn Collier, Second Saturday organizer and owner of We Can Frame That. “Because they are so invested in downtown, they asked what can they do to help make the event be more successful.”
CBI Bank &Trust and the Muscatine Journal are both returning as Presenting Sponsors for the third year in a row.
“We are thrilled to have sponsors that share the vision of the event,” said Collier. CBI also provides staff resources to help with planning and coordination. “Plus, they bring their employees’ enthusiasm and community-minded attitude to every aspect of the event,” Collier continued.
Themes and highlights planned for the Second Saturday season include:
SEPTEMBER 8 — Big House Divided Tailgate Party
OCTOBER 13 — Halloween & Pumpkins
