Muscatine’s Fire Island Robotics team has been an up-and-coming sensation in the robotics world, qualifying in the 2016-2017 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship for a global title. The team had six weeks to design and build a robot from scratch. The bot needed to be able to gather small balls from the ground and transfer them into a hoop, and retrieve sprockets and correctly install them in a rotor assembly. As if that wasn’t challenging enough, the robot needed to be able to climb a rope.
Mr. Fire was constructed and was named the Rookie All-Star Award winner at a competition in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, guaranteeing the Fire Island Robotics team entrance to the FIRST world championships in St. Louis. The Fire Island team took home Rookie of the Year awards at the world championships.
