Donations for this year’s Recycle the Dress are now being accepted at The Event Loft in the Muscatine Mall during regular mall hours. Donations will be accepted up until the event on Saturday, March 31.

Recycle the Dress event began in 2012 to give an opportunity for young ladies to look fantastic for prom and homecoming. Laura Liegois began the event at the Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station and has since passed the event on to Ashley Loveless at The Event Loft.

“I am happy to take over such an amazing event in our community. My first event with Recycle the Dress was homecoming this year, and seeing the turnout that event had sincerely touched my heart. What is the point of hanging onto dresses in a closet when you could donate them for another person to enjoy?” Loveless said.

The event expanded this year to include items for the boys upon the request of a Muscatine community member. “We have already received a lot of beautiful gowns for this year’s event, but we definitely could use more donations if the turnout is as big as the homecoming event was. We are looking for formal prom gowns in all sizes, men’s dress shirts, formal shoes and accessories. We ask that donations are clean, in good condition and in style,” Loveless said.

This year’s Prom Recycle the Dress event will be on March 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Event Loft in the Muscatine Mall. Anyone who needs attire for this year’s prom festivities in Muscatine and surrounding schools is invited. This event is based on the honor system, so anyone can attend to find the perfect dress or outfit for prom. The event is first-come, first-served and there is no cost since all of the items have been donated.

Over one thousand dresses have been given to young ladies since the event started, and this event will continue to serve our community’s teens for years to come.
