At approximately 20:23 on May 22nd, 2018 the Muscatine Joint Communications Center (MUSCOM) received a 911 call of a garage on fire that was spreading to the house. Upon arrival crews found smoke and fire coming from inside of the attached garage and smoke coming from the eves of the home at 1119 Kansas St. Crews initiated a fire attack. The fire spread to the second floor of the home through the balloon construction walls and was controlled within approximately an hour of the fire departments arrival. It was reported that all occupants were out of the buildings. The home sustained approximately $50,000 damage. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The fire department remained on scene to make sure that the fire was fully extinguished and check for hidden fires. The fire was officially called extinguished at 23:13. The fire at this time remains under investigation.

There was a report of one minor firefighter injury when the ceiling collapsed on him while making the initial fire attack. There were no other reported injuries.

The Muscatine Fire Department was assisted by the Muscatine Police Department, the Fruitland Fire Department and the Wilton Fire Department. Approximately 26 fire fighters responded to the fire.
