Roland Henry Paulsen, 88, of Durant, Iowa, passed away at Country Manor in Davenport, Iowa, on April 4, 2018. A celebration of life will be Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held Friday, April 6, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to Durant Community Schools Education Foundation or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Durant Cemetery.

The son of Harvey and Malinda Paulsen, Roland was born on January 18, 1930, in Davenport, Iowa. Roland grew up on the family farm with his siblings. He graduated from Durant High School in 1948 and the University of Iowa in 1952. He was a Korean War veteran, stationed in Alaska. He married Verna Korthaus in 1953 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport. The couple had three children: Kerri, Kendra, and Jeffrey.

His roots were deep into farming. He especially enjoyed watching the calves playing in the pasture at dusk. After a 20 year farming career, he ventured into banking in 1966, becoming a vice president at Central State Bank in Muscatine until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant, serving as a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Wilton Masonic Lodge, and was an Iowa Eastern Star state officer. He served on the boards of Durant Community School, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, Muscatine Museum, and Hershey Manor. He was an excellent ballroom dancer, and an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Playing cards (especially pinochle) and conversing about politics, history, and farming were among his many interests. He and Verna enjoyed numerous winters in Florida.

Roland is survived by two daughters, Kerri (Denis) Bettendorf, IA; Kendra (Mark) Wilsonville, OR; and a son Jeff (Teresa) of Stockton, IA; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his sister Elaine Lorenzen of Lenexa, KS. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, grandson Ian, sister Lois, and brother Darwin.
