Grace LaVonne Dietz, 90, of Davenport, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018 at her home.
Grace was born November 13, 1927 in Hammond, IN to Richard Owen Singer and Freida Liggett Singer. Grace lived with her parents near LaClede, IL until her mother’s death in 1936. She spent a short time with a foster family before being sent to orphanage in DuQuoin, IL. She was adopted by Arnold and June (Weston) Farthing and lived on a farm near Kell, IL unitl they moved to a farm near Chadwick, IL.
She graduated from a country school near Chadwick and also graduated from High School in Chadwick. Her first job was with Selective Service in Sterling. She went to Denver, CO and worked there until 1949 when she became employed by the Draft Board in Rock Island. In 1950, she met Wayne Dietz and was married Oct. 28, 1951 in Chadwick. They celebrated 61 years of marriage in October 2012 having lived on a farm near Walcott. Wayne died December 31, 2012.
She was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a teacher in the women’s program for many years. She was active in her children’s school activities during their elementary years. Grace participated in the AFS program and served as liaison for the foreign students. She was a member of Scott County Farm Bureau and later became Women’s Chairman. She was the first women to become membership Campaign Manager for Scott County Farm Bureau. In 1985 she was recognized by the American Mothers Association as a Merit Mother. In 1982 she became a librarian in the Family History Center, located in the Latter Day Saint Church serving there until 2010. Her interest in genealogy drew her to ASHHS and served as their genealogist for a short time.
She had a love for The Arts and enjoyed playing the piano for her own enjoyment. She enjoyed playing cards and dancing. She was a quilter and enjoyed making quilts for her family. She made each one of her grandchildren and great grandchildren a quilt specifically for them.
Interment will be at the Walcott Cemetery.
Grace is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter Pam Dietz of Davenport, her sons: Gary (Diane) Stevens Dietz of Frisco, TX and Jeff (Adra) Dietz of Davenport, 8 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and her sister Virginia (Blake) Smith of Idaho.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Memorials may be made to the Walcott American Legion in her memory.
