"We have an epic fight on our hands." That's what Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards told a crowd of around two hundred Saturday morning at the Holiday Inn. The former North Carolina Senator says the fight is not with politicians -- but with special interests that have been entrenched for decades. Edwards says there's a very good slate of Democratic Presidential candidates, but there are also very clear differences between them. He says he's proud he's never taken money from a Washington lobbyist or a special interest PAC. He says America needs to send a President into the epic fight arena who is ready for the fight. Edwards says by standing up to special interests, Americans can build on the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents and build for the future of their children and grandchildren. Edwards predicts that his supporters in Thursday night's caucuses will start a wave of change from the heartland of America that can't be stopped. Roxanne Conlin chaired the Edwards campaign in Iowa in 2004 -- and in 1982, she was the Democratic nominee for Governor. She told Saturday morning's audience John Edwards is a genuinely good man who has shown the quality of his character by everything he's done in his life. She says a recent C-N-N poll shows Edwards as the only Democrat who beats every Republican. And State Representative Nathan Reichert of Muscatine told the audience the nation needs a President who gets things done -- and John Edwards puts words into action.
Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney says he wants to meet the nation's challenges by strengthening America's families, economy, and military. Nearly one hundred people crammed into the banquet hall at the Cove Restaurant north of Moscow yesterday afternoon. Romney told them the nation faces extraordinary and unprecedented challenges -- like a global Jihad movement, a new healthcare crisis, education, the economy, and illegal immigration. He predicts more change in the next ten years than in the last ten centuries. Romney says everything he has touched has resulted in change -- from his 25 years in the business world to his management of the 2002 Winter Olympics to his term as Governor of Massachusetts. He says he eliminated a nearly three billion dollar budget shortfall -- not by raising taxes, but by cutting back on government. He says he's ready to go to Washington, D-C to overcome partisan bickering and promote innovative ways to solve problems. Romney says he can't predict how he'll fare in Thursday night's caucuses, but he believes he will be the Republican Presidential nominee and the next President. Mitt Romney's wife of 38 years -- Ann Romney -- introduced him yesterday by encouraging supporters to caucus for him Thursday night. She quipped others should stay home and enjoy the Orange Bowl.
