The Muskie boys soccer team is off to a tear in the Mississippi Athletic Conference. Coach Jose Varela’s charges finished last week off with two convincing shutouts of MAC rivals Pleasant Valley and North Scott without surrendering a goal. The Muskies defeated PV 5-0 and defeated North Scott by the same score. The Muskies are on a collision course for next Tuesday’s showdown with perennial state and conference heavyweight, Bettendorf. Both teams are undefeated in the conference at press time, and the winner of this matchup would control their own destiny for the MAC title.
The Bulldogs are led by Nate Seaberg and Juan Pablo Jimenez. Seaberg is the team’s leading scorer and assist man. His nine goals of the year and seven assists make him the eighth-highest point scorer in class 3A. Jiminez has found the net seven times this season. The Bulldog defense has proven to be among the state’s best as well. They have surrendered only one goal in conference play and have had a run of five shutouts this season.
Muscatine’s Luah Kahnplaye is right behind Seaberg in scoring. Carlos Arceo and the other Muscatine offense attackers will have to knife through Bettendorf’s defense. Muscatine’s goalkeeper Kobe Vasquez has 1.2 goals against average this season and the Muskie defense also has had a stellar season. Outside of two games against Iowa City West and City High, they haven’t surrendered more than two goals in a game.
