The Muscatine football program finished the season last Wednesday night with a loss against Pleasant Valley in the first round of the Iowa High School Athletic association playoffs. The Muskies finished the year at 6-4. Muscatine’s season started fast with 4 consecutive non-district wins over Dubuque Hempstead, North Scott, Davenport Central, and Clinton. An undefeated non-district record set up a matchup with district foe Cedar Rapids Washington. Muscatine led that game at half time only to lose to the Warriors 35-21. The Muskies rebounded quickly and confidently with two blowout victories over Burlington and Ottumwa, only to drop their final two district games in heartbreaking fashion to Cedar Rapids Prairie and Iowa City High.
Muscatine and PV entered the game with 2 different styles. PV a high volume run team with three players combining for over 2,000 yards on the ground coming in to the game, and the Muskies a high flying attack that featured a home run threat at running back and a strong armed QB with the ability to drive the ball down the field to what Coach Jake Mueller has called “the fastest group of receivers” he’s had at Muscatine. The result however was PV’s defense was just too much for Muscatine to handle, holding Alfonso Soko to 70 yards below his season average with 60 yards rushing. Muskie QB Drew Wichers had a solid night throwing the ball including a TD strike to junior wide receiver Drew Greenhaw. The Pleasant Valley offense rolled on the ground. Running back Arthur Braden had 149 yards and 2 touchdowns, Terry Saul 110 yards on the ground 1 Rushing touchdown and 2 Passing touchdowns. PV senior Alex Rodruck had a 56 yard touchdown catch and a 53 yard INT return for touchdown for the Spartans.
