On October 15th,  2013, has been proclaimed nationally, and  by
Iowa’s   Governor Terry Branstad, as “White Cane Safety Day.”
Muscatine’s mayor  Duane Hopkins, has been  given the
Proclamation to be signed  declaring this day also   in Muscatine.
 
It is a  day to observe  the  rights of blind and otherwise disabled
citizens of our community the   equal opportunities to employment
and full participation to their   economic and social  life in Muscatine.
 
Motorists should be aware to yield to  “Iowa’s long white  cane.”
If a pedestrian is walking or crossing a street  with a white cane it  means
please be courteous  and yield.  It is their symbol of independence.
