Friends of Melpine invite the public to Heritage Day, Saturday September 21 from 10 AM to 4 PM where there will be lots of various activities and things to see at Wild Cat Den State Park. Come visit the old rural school house which represents all Muscatine county rural schools. Enter the building through either two front doors into the girls or boys hall which opens into the school room with period lighting. One will see book shelves filled with old school books, pot belly stove, standing sand box, Victrola and piano where pianist are encouraged to play. Different size old school desk for visiting students to try to find one their size. Photo floor albums and new pictures received are found on the blackboards of school days gone by. The teacher's hall has a glass case filled with precious items all of which have been donated. Many record books stating pupils names, attendance record and grades are recorded. Lots of notebooks filled with teachers contracts, eight grade graduation programs, report cards, old clippings, perfect attendance certificates and history of the rural school teachers and students. Outside will be fun crafts for kids to enjoy, an old school bus, out house along with a hand crank pump used many years ago. Plan to spend the day as lunch can be purchased on the grounds.
