The Muscatine Heinz plant, which employs more than 300 people, has been named the Heinz factory of the year. Henry John Heinz, founder of the H.J. Heinz Company, said to do a common thing uncommonly well brings success. For more than 100 years, generations of employees at the Heinz ketchup, condiments and sauces factory in Muscatine appear to be proof of that.

 

The drought continues in eastern Iowa, and it's not doing crops any good. We asked Virgil Schmitt, extension field agronomist for the ISU Extension, Muscatine County, to assess the situation.

 

Muscatine Community College kicked off its fall semester with a picnic yesterday (Thursday). Hundreds of students attended on a warm, sunny day.

 

The Blue Zones Project will host a kickoff event in Muscatine next Tuesday, September 10th. It will feature Dan Buettner, National Geographic explorer and best-selling author of the book, The Blue Zones. Our Ron Edwin had an opportunity to talk to Buettner.

 

Fruitland Fun Days kicks off tonight and continues Saturday. According to the city’s website, family activities begin at 6 tonight and food will be served at Drake Park. Also, that's when a Smoke-Off begins. Participants prepare to smoke their food overnight and judges will determine the winners Saturday at noon. Tomorrow, Saturday, firefighters hold a 7 o'clock pancake breakfast at the fire station, and there's a parade at 10. After that,  visitors can browse vendors in the park while listening to music by Vann Britt. At noon there is a bags tournament and a dog show on the basketball court. You can try your luck at BINGO after the parade or CINCO at 1 at Drake Park. The sixth annual car show runs from 9 to 2 at Drake Park. There also will be activities at Drake Park all day including bounce houses for the kids. The band Crazy Delicious starts playing at 9 in the evening.
