Muskie softball coach Dennis Schuur achieved a big honor on Saturday in the first game of a two-game tournament. He earned his 1,000th career win. He taught and coached in Lake City, Iowa, before coming to Muscatine in 1985, where he's been for the last 25 years. We asked him if he thought he would ever achieve this mark.

Trinity Muscatine’s new emergency department opens for business at 7 Wednesday morning. Those needing to access it should use the Mulberry Avenue entrance. The new emergency department entrance is located on the northeast side of the hospital, facing Mulberry, near the laboratory entrance.  Ambulances will utilize a garage located on the north side of the hospital.


A group of Muscatine students who will be studying in China for the next month arrived in Beijing on Saturday after an exhausting flight. That's according to their blog. They met up with a tour guide, joined a study group from California and were treated to a welcome dinner that included Peking duck. The tour guide reminded them to watch traffic as the cars in Beijing “drive zigzag” and do not stop for pedestrians. Sightseeing began yesterday.


There were problems with a heater. That's according to the sole survivor of a plane crash that killed four people — including 22-year-old Stephen Luth of Muscatine — on May 11th, 2012, in Kansas. The Tulsa World reports survivor Hannah Luce told the National Transportation Safety Board that the heater had a "terrible smell" and “dark, black smoke" entered the plane when the heater was turned off, making it difficult to see.


Davenport police have made an arrest in a southwest Davenport shooting death that took the life of 25-year-old Amanda Abbott of Davenport. She died at the scene a little after 1 Saturday morning. A suspect, identified as 22-year-old A.J. Coats, was located in Milan and arrested. He is in the Rock Island County Jail awaiting extradition on warrants charging him with second-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of stolen property.


An Oregon resident is dead and seven others were hurt when an SUV rolled over a little before 8:30 Saturday morning in Cedar County. The Iowa State Patrol says 21-year-old Ivon Orozco of Portland died in the accident on I-80. The Ford Expedition was westbound when a rear tire deflated, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
