Despite criticism of the state’s incentive package for a southeast Iowa fertilizer plant, Democrats in the Iowa Senate are backing Republican Governor Terry Branstad’s budget for the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The bill also calls for reopening state Workforce Development offices in Ames, Atlantic, Denison, Newton and Clinton. The bill passed in the Senate on a 26-24 vote, with all the no votes coming from Republicans.

The cities of Muscatine and Fruitland will be having Spring Clean Up during the week of April 22nd through the 26th. It’s an opportunity for residents to clean up their yards, basements and neighborhoods. Place all large, unwanted items….such as furniture and building materials in small amounts….out the night before the regular garbage day. Questions can be directed to the Muscatine Recycling Center and Transfer Station.

 

The Keck Memorial Library and Louisa County Conservation are teaming up for a screening of the first full-length documentary film ever made about environmentalist Aldo Leopold. The film will be shown at no cost at Keck Memorial Library from 6:30 to 7:30 on Friday night, April 15th. Leopold gained his appreciation for the environment along the banks of the Mississippi River in Burlington. Children are invited to attend a free program lasting the entire length of the film.

 

Iowa Auditor Dave Vaudt is resigning as of May 3rd to head the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. The board sets the financial accounting and reporting standards for state and local governments. Late last year Vaudt was encouraged to apply for the job.

 

Thanks to funding from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, Eulenspiegel Circus and Puppet Theatre of West Liberty is scheduling a summer Neighborhood Tour. A show and workshop package is available at minimal or no cost to groups in low-income neighborhoods and on a sliding scale to middle and higher income neighborhoods.
