Three people died Thursday morning when their passenger car went out of control and hit a Louisa-Muscatine School District bus. The Iowa State Patrol says those killed were the driver of the car, 78-year-old Kathryn Joan Newton, and her passengers, 75-year-old Barbara Louise Higgs and 50-year-old Mark Anthony Kaltefleiter, all of Burlington. There were no students on the bus, but its driver, 35-year-old Seth David Singleton of Wapello, was taken to Trinity Muscatine with unknown injuries. The accident took place at 7:22 on Highway 61 south of L&M High School near 170th Street. The Iowa State Patrol says Newton’s 2005 Nissan Sentra was northbound on ice-covered Highway 61 when it crossed the centerline and hit the southbound 2002 Bluebird school bus. Police blocked the area of the accident for several hours so an investigation could take place.
