The Gazette in Cedar Rapids is reporting that four of the last five Iowa Blockbuster stores, including the one in Muscatine, will close in April. An Ankeny store will remain open. Dish Network bought the then-bankrupt video rental chain in 2011. It closed about 500 Blockbuster stores last year.
State Senator Joe Bolkcom, an Iowa City Democrat, calls the decision to give millions of dollars in state and local tax credits and tax incentives to the Orascom Corporation to build a fertilizer plant in Lee County the state’s worst economic development deal ever. And Bolkcom says he thought that before last week's news that the feds are suing a subsidiary of Orascom.
The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry is still looking for applicants to join the newly created Chamber Ambassadors Network. Successful applicants will be selected and approved by the chamber’s Membership Committee. The first round of selections will be made this month with ongoing selections in March. If you want to see a jail without having to be arrested, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is offering tours of the Sheriff’s Office and Jail. The next few tours are offered on February 26th, March 2nd and March 12th. The tours last about 45 minutes. Anyone interested in attending should contact Captain Dave Wagner at 356-6020.
