The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recommended that Muscatine County be designated “Nonattainment” for the 1-hour sulfur dioxide National Ambient Air Quality Standard. That’s based on data measured at a monitor at Musser Park. The EPA has given the Iowa DNR until April 8th to provide additional information for consideration prior to EPA finalizing its nonattainment recommendation. Therefore, the Iowa DNR is requesting that Muscatine county residents and businesses send any comments and technical input on the EPA’s recommendation to the Iowa DNR by March 15th to allow the agency an opportunity to consider the comments.
U.S.-China relations may take a leap forward tomorrow in Muscatine. That’s when six provincial officials from China visit Roger and Sarah Lande's home. They’re in Iowa to celebrate 30 years of sister state relations. They’re also celebrating the Chinese New Year. A year ago, Xi Jinping visited the Landes and others he had met during a 1985 visit to Muscatine while he was a provincial official. He now is the general secretary of the Communist Party of China.
A Cedar Rapids-based trucking company, CRST, will pay 50 grand to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit. The money goes to Monika Starke, the only remaining plaintiff in a lawsuit by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Starke had said CRST was too slow in responding to her claims that a male trainer had sexually harassed her.
